44 Ranch raises naturally lean beef grown as nature intended:  grass-fed, chemical, antibiotic & hormone free, lower in fat & calories.  We raise Holstein or Holstein cross cattle as they are noted for their natural leanness.  Ultimately we strive to benefit our land & animals through a thoughtful & caring stewardship.  We rotate our pastures between cattle & horses controlling weed proliferation without chemical use.  In the winter our cattle are fed alfalfa hay, naturally grown on our ranch without chemicals.  Our alfalfa fields are grazed in the fall after the last cutting, using grazing as a tool to improve ecological conditions.  Our beef is sold on the hoof (live).  Selling an animal on the hoof exempts us from having to get USDA inspection.  We don't sell this way to avoid inspection, but to insure the quality of our product.  Thus avoiding retail, i.e. to sell through a common grocery store.  Pricing is determined by the per-pound price of $1.10, multiplied by the live weight of the animal.  Finished weight is anywhere from 1,100 lb. to 1,300 lbs.  The beef may be hand-picked if you so choose.  Payment is expected before the custom meat packer is called.  The smaller meatpackers believe in dry aging - hanging a side of beef for 2 to 3 weeks in a dry cooler.  This process shrinks the carcass by removing water & allows natural enzymes to break down fibers in the meat, making it tender & wonderfully flavored!  Using the smaller meatpacker also gives you the choice of meat cut & wrapped to your personal taste.  Pricing from the meatpacker is charged by a per pound carcass wt.  At this time our meatpacker is charging .35 cents per pound, plus taxes.  There is also a $55.00 kill fee added.  This payment is expected when you pick up the meat.
